Although benign tumors are not life-threatening, they may be associated with pain and may cause the patient concern. A fibroadenoma is the most common benign tumor in the breast. A fibroadenoma may be palpable or be sensitive depending on its size and position in the breast. This particularly applies to the time before the period when the breast swells. Larger lumps can deform the breast because the skin bulges outward at this point.
The chance of developing a malignant tumour from a fibroadenoma is extremely low and because fibroadenoma can regress with time, no further action may be needed once a core biopsy has confirmed the benign nature of the lump.. Nevertheless, due to concerns mentioned above, some patients may be advised to undergo further follow-up and/or surgical excision. Thus, the traditional management options available to women diagnosed with a fibroadenoma include observation or surgical excision. A surgical excision may result in an adverse cosmetic outcome
Many alternatives to open surgery and watchful waiting are now available and are being developed, including vacuum-assisted biopsy, cryoablation (freezing) and a variety of technologies relying on local heating of tissue among which is Echotherapy.
Echotherapy is a new treatment option in the management of benign tumors like breast fibroadenomas. It combines therapeutic high frequency ultrasound and ultrasound imaging to visualize and non-invasively treat the tumors.
The ultrasound beams are precisely targeted at the site of the fibroadenoma resulting in the reduction in size of the breast lesion with no incisions or scars. This non-surgical treatment is performed on an outpatient basis in a single session under local anaesthesia with the patient able to travel home immediately after the treatment.
The size of the fibroadenoma will decrease by half on average within 3 months,  It will continue to reduce in size thereafter. As the fibroadenoma decreases in size, the symptoms usually disappear. Patient satisfaction surveys have shown this treatment is acceptable.
