Breast Cancer Surgery

Breast Clinic

Surgery is usually the first type of treatment for many people with breast cancer. Your doctor will discuss with you the most appropriate type of surgery based on your type of cancer. Our breast care nurse will be present to provide you with any additional information you may need during your treatment process.

What to expect as your surgery journey?

On the morning of your operation you will be admitted to the hospital where your contact information and payment details will be taken.

Once admitted to your room a nurse will confirm your personal details, answer any questions concerning hospital procedures and attach a bracelet to your wrist with your name and hospital number.

Pre-surgery

Before you go in for surgery, if your consultant requests for any further investigations, such as blood tests or X-Rays that will be undertaken by the hospital team. Your breast surgeon will come visit you and ask you to sign a consent form.

The Consultant Anaesthetist may also make a pre-operative visit to ask relevant questions and explain the method of anaesthesia.

Types of surgery

There are two main types of breast cancer surgery:

  • Breast conserving surgery – which involves removing the cancerous lumps
  • Mastectomy – taking out the whole breast, which is usually followed by breast reconstruction surgery

Your consultant will discuss the type of surgery best suited for you prior to your admission to the hospital.

Post-surgery

Our team will arrange an appointment for you to see your surgeon 7-10 days after your operation where they will help you with your pathology results and recommend a treatment plan. This may include radiotherapy, chemotherapy and hormone therapy.

You will be checked for any wound infection and if required your dressings will be changed by our breast care nursing team.
